Zoque Museum
The Zoques are a Mexican ethnic group from the states of Chiapas, Oaxaca, and Tabasco. The Zoques of Chiapas call themselves O-depüt (people of the word). Just 20 minutes from downtown Tuxtla Gutiérrez lies the Copoya district, a community considered one of the few places that keep alive the spirit and traditions of the Zoque people, the ancestral root of the central region of the State. In the central park stands the Zoque Museum, whose halls reveal the origin, customs, art, and worldview of this culture.
In the museum we can also see the dwelling, which traditionally has a thatched roof, wattle-and-daub walls, and a dirt floor. Today, this type of home is only found in the more remote hamlets, as it has been replaced by constructions of sheet metal, cement, brick, and stone.
The houses have a yard or plot where a wide variety of fruit is grown: mangoes, limes, oranges, custard apples, bananas, flowers, and plants for medicinal and culinary use. Generally, the dwelling is rectangular in shape with a single room that has a smaller annex used as a kitchen.
Beside the museum you can also see photos of the different customs, traditions, beliefs, and legends. The Zoque Museum has workshops where you can learn to play the drum and the flute, the regional music of the Zoques, as well as an audiovisual area and a library.
