San Marcos Cathedral

 This Cathedral was built in the second half of the 16th century. Its facade is composed of a doorway flanked by columns that support an entablature and two windows on the second level, and above them a winged lion, the symbol of Saint Mark, resting on a pedestal, all within a large niche. The great tower houses a German-made carillon with 48 bells that, at the top of every hour, play a melody to accompany the figures of the apostles that parade across a pedestal. The interior has a Latin-cross plan with a single nave, shallow side chapels, a choir at the foot of the nave, and a presbytery.
The crossing is covered by a hemispherical dome, while the vaults of the arms are made to resemble ribbing. In its decoration, the interior preserves some Neoclassical-inspired motifs dating from the beginning of the century.
