Chiapa de Corzo
Chiapa de Corzo, a colonial site of tradition and culture, framed by the warmth of its people, is one of the most beautiful cities in the State of Chiapas; located just 15 minutes from the capital city; its value lies in its history, as it was the first city founded by the Spaniards during the 16th century. In Chiapa de Corzo, the Mudejar ensemble stands out, formed by La Pila, a fountain of refined Moorish inspiration made of brick, unique in Ibero-America; the temple of Santo Domingo and the convent building annexed to it, now home to the Museum of Lacquer, as well as the ruins of the temple of San Sebastián.
Other points of interest that the city has are its neighborhood chapels, such as that of San Jacinto or El Calvario, which holds a magnificent Renaissance altarpiece carved in wood with the theme of the Crucifixion; the ruins of the colonial temple of San Sebastián, or the pre-Hispanic ruins from the Preclassic and Classic periods, and the Marimba Museum, belonging to the Nandayapa Vargas family, who, continuing the family tradition of making marimbas, offer those who visit them a tour of the workshop, where you can see the wood in its natural state and its step-by-step evolution until it becomes the internationally renowned artistic instrument. The Nandayapa family even presents a complete lecture on the origins and evolution of the marimba, which so stirs the emotion and joy of Chiapas.
