Ya Toch Barum Ecotourism Camp
It is an Ecotourism Camp because it is a center certified by the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources, with facilities in harmony with the environment; it has sustainable performance and good practices based on the principles of sustainable tourism, actively contributing to the conservation of the natural and cultural heritage of the site where it is located. It is located in Lacanja Chansayab, a Lacandon subcommunity whose subsistence is based on the natural resources provided by the biodiversity of Montes Azules and on the Mayan cultural legacy expressed in the natural monument of Bonampak.
It constitutes the largest expanse of evergreen rainforest in the country. The Lacandon Jungle is home to more plant species than all the states of northern Mexico combined. It is estimated that in a single hectare of the Lacandon Jungle there are 267 plant species, of which 160 are trees.
Standout trees include the mahogany, the rosewood, and the cedar; among the plants, I can mention tree ferns, bromeliads, orchids, and many epiphytic plants.
Fauna
The Lacandon Jungle is home to many species endemic to the Mesoamerican humid rainforests and several threatened or endangered animal species, such as the jaguar (Panthera onca), the harpy eagle (Harpia harpyja), and the scarlet macaw (Ara macao), among other animals.
Cultural Aspects
On the edges of the Montes Azules Biosphere Reserve lies the only natural site inhabited by Mayan descendants, who still preserve their cultural traditions, faithful guardians of the remains of the Mayan culture, located in the vicinity of the Bonampak archaeological site.
